Walking Tour

The New Amsterdam Trail

Learn about the 17th century Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam and how its twin legacies of trade and tolerance remain an integral part of the city today.

Take this seasonal National Park Service Ranger-guided tour led on a group headset system and also hear commentary from prominent historians and scholars including, Russell Shorto, author of the bestselling book, The Island at the Center of the World. Or explore on your own with our self-guided audio tour and go off the grid through the winding streets that still retain their Dutch names. On your tour you will:

  • Visit the site of Fort Amsterdam, the first permanent fortification on the island.
  • Hear about the ragtag group of famous and infamous settlers.
  • See the outline of the Stadt Huys, the Dutch first seat of government.

ROUTE
Begins at Castle Clinton in Battery Park; concludes at Federal Hall. About 60 minutes long.

National Parks of New York Harbor historian Steve Laise

PARTNERS: This is an official Gateway to America Tour created by the Harbor Conservancy and the National Park Service in collaboration with Henry Hudson 400 Foundation. Gateway to America tours begin downtown and on New York Harbor -- the place that has shaped our heritage from the time of the first explorers, to successive waves of immigrants, shipmasters and pleasure-boaters propelling the city's growth into the nation's most populous and most vibrant.

SPONSORS: The Tiffany & Co. Foundation is among the founding sponsors of the Harbor Conservancy. Their generous grant was matched, in part, by federal funds to produce this tour. Henry Hudson 400 Foundation is a partner on the tour, through the generosity of American Express and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
